Critter Jungle: A Customer's Perspective

by Critter Jungle Tuesday, 03 October 2006

Critter Jungle is The Natural Place for your pet. We care about our customers and their pets.  We do our utmost to provide the widest variety of alternative, all-natural pet products which are healthier for pets and the environment.  We provide nutritional consultations with our customers so they leave our store informed and with the best possible choice in pet food.

Critter Jungle provides financial support to many pet rescues in the form of free food and supplies, as well as fundraisers in the form of dog washes and a variety of other events. We also support rescue efforts by volunteering our time and space in the store.

Below is a testimonial written by an anonymous customer of Critter Jungle.

Critter Jungle—Ottawa's Best Kept Secret

Kelvin and Jeff Stanke, owners and operators of Critter Jungle—Ottawa's best kept secret—are not simply running a “pet store”. They really care about pet owners and their companions and are providing their clients with more than just great products and friendly service. In an effort to enhance the joys of pet ownership and to give back to the community, they are taking a proactive approach to helping pet owners.

For about six months now, the folks at Critter Jungle have been hosting mini-seminars designed to provide valuable information on pets and pet ownership. To date, seminars have been held on such interesting topics as feeding raw, fitting a muzzle properly, homeopathic and heilkunst disciplines, and legal obligations and liabilities for dog owners.

Some future seminar topics include:

  • Why My Dog Bites and What I Can Do
  • Kids and Dogs
  • Dog Nutrition—What Dog Food Labels Mean

There is no charge for the seminars, but participants are asked to make a donation to the charity selected for the day.

And, Critter Jungle has not forgotten children and seniors. For the past five years, it has participated in the Down Syndrome Annual Picnic. Last year they jumped at the opportunity to do a “show and tell” event at a children's day camp, sending a staff member and a number of exotic pets, including a parrot, a gecko, several snakes and a Blue Tongued Skink.

More recently, the Peter D. Clark Center, a long-term care facility asked if Critter Jungle would visit the facility and bring some pets for the residents to enjoy. To date, there have been six visits to the centre with a variety of pets, including a parrot, several snakes, a Monkey Tail Skink, a baby rabbit, a blind foster puppy and two beautiful Australian Shepherds that own a Critter Jungle staff member.

Critter Jungle leads the pack when it comes to assisting a variety of local dog and cat rescues. And they have converted from selling parrots to using the store to place rescued parrots. On any given day, aside from a plentiful, competitively-priced stock of quality pet food, treats and merchandise and knowledgeable, friendly staff, you might see a stunning South African Grey Parrot or an adorable rescue dog or cat playing in the store and just waiting to steal your heart.

Critter Jungle has been in business for 20 years and is truly a friendly and interesting place to shop, learn or simply enjoy some friendly conversation about the latest pet merchandise, food, and nutritional information and rescue organizations—virtually anything to do with people and their pets.
