Puppy Mills
You’ve probably already figured it out: Critter Jungle loves animals. Our mission is to contribute positively to the health and welfare of companion animals. We are dedicated to bringing the best products out there to you and your furry, feathered, finned or scaly friend.
From time to time, customers ask if we sell puppies or kittens. To them we say, first, Thank You. We think it’s a major compliment to think that our customers would put their trust in us and match them up with a new furry companion. But we don’t sell dogs or cats of any age.
Why not?
Well, we want you and your new pet to be buddies for life. There are wonderful breeders who are dedicated to raising the best possible ambassadors for their chosen breed, and there are many rescue organizations that are exclusively concerned with making sure that homeless animals find the right human companions for them. Who better, then, to bring you together with the perfect companion for you?
Critter Jungle firmly believes that no one does it better than ethical breeders, and we won’t contribute to the tragic pet overpopulation in North America. We applaud the work of ethical breeders, and we support the tireless efforts of the humane society and other rescue organizations who bring in homeless dogs and cats and match them with appropriate homes.
We join other animal lovers in our concern about puppy and kitten mills. When you’re ready to bring a new furry friend into your life, we hope that you will visit a reputable breeder, a rescue volunteer or your local animal shelter. There’s no limit to the possibilities—puppies/kittens, adults and seniors, virtually any and all breeds and every imaginable mix!
What’s a puppy mill?
The National Companion Animal Coalition (NCAC), which consists of the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, the RCMP, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, and others, defines a puppy mill as a “high-volume, sub-standard dog breeding operation that sells purebred or mixed breed dogs to unsuspecting buyers.” These unscrupulous folks are sub-standard in every way—breeding practices that often lead to genetic defects or hereditary disorders, erroneous or falsified pedigree certificates, poor treatment and socialization, dirty conditions, isolation and little if any care.
These unfortunate pups are usually sold from backyards or through third parties. Sometimes, unfortunately, they’re sold by pet stores.
Critter Jungle does not support puppy mills. We hope you don’t either.
Our advice to a potential pet owner.
Congratulations! You are on your way to experiencing the many joys of pet guardianship. Welcome to our club—we don’t think there’s a better place to be. It’s a fact—pets can help boost self-esteem, provide stress relief and improve overall health. Pets can provide a lifetime of unconditional love.
We encourage you to put as much thought into this new adventure as possible. Do some research—we’re here to help! Come talk to our staff—most of us have pets, and some are involved in breed rescue organizations. Talk to breeders and friends. Go to your local library. Go to the dog park and talk to the people you see there—most people are all too happy to tell you all about their best buddy, and they can usually be counted on to be honest with you about the upsides and the downsides of any breed or mix.
